As teachers and students of geography, we must seize these opportunities to become better geographers and promote not only the field of geography, but an awareness of our own geographic surroundings.  After completing this lesson, everyone should become a “Windshield Geographer” That is, as you drive or walk around the WJPS neighborhood look at the built environment, imprints on the landscape and try to understand your local sense of place.

Directions:
1. Five Themes of Geography
  • Walk or drive around the WJPS neighborhood.  Observe the examples of each of the Five Themes of Geography. (Location, Place, Region, Movement, Human-Environment Interaction)
  • Take 2 photos of each of the Five Themes represented in your area. Each photo must be from a different area of your neighborhood.
  • Each photo must have a caption that fully explains the information you are trying to communicate about each theme captured in the photo. (Tell us what is going on in each photo and how the theme is represented.)

2. Visual Aid
