Winter Break Assignment - Was the Boston Massacre really a "Massacre?"

Today's Assignment - "An Early Call for Settlers"

In this assignment, you will be reading excerpts from a pamphlet, encouraging people in England to settle in the "New World."

When you are finished with the reading, copy, and complete the table on the second page of the handout.  You will rate each of the arguments provided in the pamphlet, based on their effectiveness in enouraging people to settle in America.

When you've finished rating the arguments, you will answer the questions below.


  1. Based on the worksheet, what did you learn about the British reasons for settling in North America?
  2. What reasons might explain why Peckham believed that settlement was in Great Britain’s interest?
  3. If you were living in England at this time, after reading this pamphlet, would you have volunteered to sign up for an expedition to America?  Why?  Why not?  
  4. In your opinion, which of Peckham’s arguments is the strongest?  The weakest? Why?

Chapter 1 Test Study Guide

Hello, All:

We are going to have our test on Chapter 1, on FRIDAY October 16th.  It will be based on vocab terms, multiple choice, and short answer questions.

The vocab words will come from the worksheets, which we completed for last week's HW.  

The multiple choice questions will be similar to the ones found here.    I will be taking the questions from, "Geography of the United States of America," "Pre-Columbian America and European Exploration," "Human Migration," "Maya, Aztec, Inca," "Native American Indian Societies."

The short answer questions will be based on primary, or secondary sources.  You will read the sources, and then answer questions, based on them.

Hello!

Here is your assignment for today.

1.  CAREFULLY, read Bernal Diaz Del Castillo's account of the Aztec City of Tenochtitlan.  You can find that document by clicking here. 

2. Working with your team-mates, you will have a series of questions to answer, based on the document, and your knowledge of Social Studies.  The questions are listed below.  You will be answering these questions as a team.  You will be working in a "numbered heads" fashion (Mr. Tesler will explain what this is).  Everyone on the team must agree to the answers to the questions, and write them down, in their class-work section.   The questions are as follows:


  1. Based on the reading, what did you learn about the Aztec capital? 
  2. In your opinion how technologically advanced were the Aztecs?  What evidence do you have to back up your statement? 
  3. Based on what you've learned from Diaz's account, how did the Aztec level of technology compare to Europe's technology at the time? 
  4. As a person living in New York, in the year 2015, what do you find most amazing about the Aztec capital?
